Rafael Louzán, president of the RFEF, has tried to calm tensions between Barcelona and Spain after Lamine Yamal dropped out of the latest international squad.
The Barcelona star has withdrawn from Spain duty after undergoing treatment for pubalgia, with the RFEF putting out a statement making it clear they weren’t happy with the situation.
Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has also spoken of his “surprise” at losing Yamal before the two fixtures, but Louzan says the decision has been made for the good of the player.
“The first thing is that we have to take care of the player. Sometimes there are circumstances that can perhaps be handled better, but the important thing is to take care of the player. He is a club and national team player, and it is very important for both entities that he recovers as soon as possible,” he said.
“These are things that can be handled differently, but they are unforeseen circumstances and we must act, but we are not going to stir up any controversy. He is a great player, the important thing is that he recovers and that we can have him back with the club and the national team as soon as possible.”
Yamal is now expected to rest for the next week or so before returning to action with Barcelona. Spain, meanwhile, will play Turkey and Georgia and will hope to seal their place at World Cup 2026.
