Spain boss Luis de la Fuente reveals chat with Barcelona star Lamine Yamal

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has insisted there’s “no conflict” with Barcelona over Lamine Yamal after seeing the teenager withdraw from his latest squad.

De la Fuente has admitted he was “surprised” at the turn of events, as Yamal has been ruled out for 7-10 days after undergoing treatment for his pubalgia, but says all is well between the national team and Barcelona.

The Spain boss also revealed the chat he had with Yamal and says the Barca star wanted to stay with the national team.

“I spoke with him yesterday; we were together all afternoon and also into the evening. I was with him this morning,” he told RNE.

“He wanted to stay; he’s completely dedicated to the national team. We have constant communication with the players, especially when they’re injured. I tried to reassure him; he was worried, he’s very young. This sport is extremely risky.

“There’s no conflict. Everyone has their own interests, which we need to understand, and they all lead to the same point. Everyone wants to have a good season, and our objectives are aligned; we have to understand that.

“We always work closely with the clubs, prioritizing health. But just as they play for their clubs, they have to play for the national team. I don’t know any player who doesn’t want to come to the national team; quite the opposite, they get angry when they’re not there. Just as I respect Barcelona’s decisions, I ask that mine be respected.”

Yamal has since returned to Barcelona and will rest and recuperate over the international break. He is expected back when domestic action resumes, with Barca facing Athletic Club and Chelsea next.
