Athletic Club clash is a reminder that Barcelona did well by signing Marcus Rashford

The big Barcelona news over the summer was which winger they would sign to provide backup for Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.

Joan Laporta and Deco were correct in assessing this as a serious area of need. Lamine and Raphinha have both been sidelined for stretches of time in the early going of the season, and Marcus Rashford has filled the void with aplomb.

But let’s remember that Nico Williams seemed destined to make the move to the Camp Nou, before standing up the Blaugrana for the second year in a row.

So far, so good for Barca, when comparing the output of the two forwards.

Nico Williams has played in nine matches, and has recorded two goals and two assists, including the game winner against Real Oviedo a week back. Marcus Rashford has been Barcelona’s most productive player in a season of endemic injuries across the club. He has played in 16 matches, and has tallied six goals and eight assists across all competitions. Let’s hope that the recent news of him missing training is indeed nothing more than “minor discomfort.”

On paper, the two players have a similar profile, with the ability to play across all three forward positions. I have a feeling that if Nico had signed with Barcelona, he would be much more productive than he is able to be at Athletic Club. Instead, Marcus Rashford has seized the opportunity and is making the most of life for a club that is known for total attacking football.

The biggest difference between the two players is that Rashford prioritized his game, while Nico made what seemed like a safe choice to stay close to home and family. It doesn’t hurt that they offered a lucrative contract to boot.

For Barcelona, it was a one year loan versus a signing with a significant transfer fee. At the moment, they must be thrilled with the return on their investment.

There’s no guarantee that Rashford will be a Barcelona player a year from now. For that to happen, he will have to continue performing at his current level, and also show he is willing to do more defensive work, especially if Hansi Flick is the coach for years to come.

Reportedly, the purchase option is for just €30 million. At that price, it may be hard for Barcelona to turn down, but I have a feeling, in the end, it will come down to whether the team succeeds and wins trophies this season with Rashford leading the line.

There’s still a long season ahead, and lots of time for Rashford to prove himself.

With Barcelona hosting Athletic Club this weekend, however, it’s a good time to show appreciation for what the English international has already delivered.

If it weren’t for him, especially given the injury to Raphinha, who knows where Barcelona would be in the league standings.

As it stands, the Blaugrana are in a strong position to compete for everything, and Marcus Rashford has played a leading role.
