FC Barcelona’s sporting department never really switches off, and that constant work spans far beyond the first team. Alongside planning for immediate competition, the club continues to invest heavily in youth recruitment, with the goal of feeding La Masia and maintaining its reputation as one of football’s top academies.
The latest name gaining traction at the Ciutat Esportiva is Ajay Tavares. The English winger, currently with Norwich City, is just 15 but already attracting attention across Europe. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have moved decisively in recent weeks and are well positioned to complete his signing once he turns 16 on December 28.
One key factor smoothing the process is Tavares’ European passport. Despite developing in the United Kingdom, his documentation allows him to transfer before turning 18, removing one of the main obstacles often associated with recruiting young players from England.
Tavares has built a strong reputation through both club and international performances. After progressing through England’s under 15 and under 16 sides, he has already made the step up to the under 17s this season. His development has not gone unnoticed at St. George’s Park, and several major clubs, both in the Premier League and abroad, have been monitoring his progress.
On the pitch, Tavares is primarily a left winger, a profile Barcelona continue to prioritize for the future. Reports say he stands out for his physical power and speed, traits that have also allowed him to operate as a center forward when needed. That physical edge has helped him compete regularly against opponents two or even three years older, including appearances with Norwich’s under 18 team, where he has already found the net this season.
According to SPORT, Barcelona’s plan would be to integrate him gradually rather than fast track him straight into the senior setup. If the move is finalized, he could initially reinforce the youth ranks and potentially work his way toward Barça Atlètic under Juliano Belletti, depending on his adaptation and progress.
The interest in Tavares also fits a broader sporting vision. With Lamine Yamal emerging as a long term option on the right wing, the club continues to search for a comparable talent on the left who can be developed internally over time. While competition for the Norwich prospect has been strong, Barcelona believe their project and pathway can be decisive.
Tavares is not expected to be the only young addition under consideration. Reports suggest the club is also exploring other promising profiles, including the Egyptian talent Hamza Abdelkarim, as part of a wider strategy to strengthen the base of the squad for the years ahead.
