Rival watch: More good news for Barcelona as 9-man Real Madrid lose to Celta Vigo

Barcelona have enjoyed a great weekend in La Liga after beating Real Betis 5-3 on Saturday and then seeing rivals Real Madrid drop points on Sunday night.

Xabi Alonso’s side went down 2-0 to Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu and ended the game with nine men after Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras were sent off for Los Blancos.

Williot Swedberg was the hero for Celta. The 21-year-old broke the deadlock on 54 minutes with a nonchalant flick from inside the penalty area.

He then sealed the game in stoppage time, casually rounding goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and popping the ball into an empty net to seal Madrid’s first home defeat in La Liga this season.

The victory is also Celta’s first win over Real Madrid since May 2014 and will see manager Alonso come under more scrutiny after an underwhelming start to life back in the Spanish capital.

Madrid had topped the table by five points after winning El Clasico at the end of October but are now four points behind Flick’s side heading towards the final fixtures of 2025.
